Quanzhou Overview

Quanzhou is on the list of the first batch of 24 national historical and cultural cities in China designated by the State Council. It lies in the southeastern part of Fujian Province. The Urban area resembeles a carp, thus its nickname "Carp City". It has a total area of 11,015 square kilometers and a population of 7.7 million. China's first seaport was opened in Quanzhou which became the anchor point of the Marine Silk Road. For its entensive contacts with the outside world,Quanzhou boasts a colorful and pluralistic culture.

The Kaiyuan Temple is the largest Buddhist temple in Fujian Provinc; the Qingjing Mosque is one of the oldest mosques in China; and the Mani Thatched Hut is the best preserved site of Manichaeism in the world For the coexistence of servera religions, Quanzhou is acclaimed as a "Museum of World Religions". The Luoyang Bridge is one of the four most famous bridges from ancient China. The Tombs of Muslim Sages is located in large Muslim community in the city.

Hui'an County in Quanzhou has nurtured a unique group of women, known as Hui'an Women, wh wear yellow bamboo hats in conical shape, colorful scarves, blue blouses, silver waistbands and loose straight trousers. They have become the representatives of the moving and unusual folk customs of Fujian.
