Shangri-la Overview

Shangri-La, known as Gyalthang in Tibetan, is a county of Diqing Tibetan autonomous prefecture in Yunnan province, located on among Hengduan Mountains, the south side of Qingai-Tibet plateau. The former’s name is Zhongdian County; changed the named as Shangri-La in 2001 by government. Shangri-La was originally from The Lost Horizon, wrote by James Hilton and described a hidden paradise where inhabitants lived for centuries. Similar to the description in Hilton’s novel, Shangri-La County in Yunnan attracts a great number of tourists from home and aboard ever year.

Shangri-La County is located on the junction of Yunnan, Sichuan and Tibet, covering an area of 11,613 square kilometers, with population of about 154,100 mainly in Tibetan and other 25 nationalities including Hani, Zhuang, Manchu, Lisu, Naxi, Yi, Bai. It is a traditional community of Tibetan. The main language here is Tibetan. Some of them can speak mandarin and simple English because of development of tourism and commerce. The capital of Shangri-La is Jiantang town. The telephone code is 0887.   

As a famous highlight for Yunan tour, Shangri-La has rich tourism resource with gorgeous landscape and splendid ethnic culture including vast grassland, great Meri Snow Mountain and Haba Snow Mountain, Tiger leaping gorge, grand Songzanlin Monastery, ethnic villages and the beautiful national nature reserve of Pudacuo featured in diverse plants and landscape. The old town of Shangri-La town, Dukezong ancient town was also brilliant spot for visiting; however, the most part was burnt on down on 11 January 2014.

Shangri-La is worth to visit around a year. Well, May, June and September would be the most attractive time in Shangri-La.
