Tianti Mountain Grottoes

Tianti Mountain Grottoes Travel Guide

Located near Dengshan Village, Zhonglu Town of Liangzhou District, the grottoes are 50 km away from Wuwei. First built in Northern Liang period (401-439) with cuttings by the following dynasties, the grottoes have a magnificent scope and are called “the earliest Chinese grottoes” by scholars.

With hundreds of square meters of frescoes left now, there are three layers of caverns, 17 niches for statures of Buddha, more than 100 statues of Buddha as well as scriptures of the dynasties of the Tang (618-907). Among them, the sitting statue of Buddha is very lifelike and may be rated as classical works of grotto art.
