South Putuo Temple Travel Guide

The tourist area in the southern part of Xiamen Island boats many historic sites. The South Putuo Buddhist Temple was built in Tang Dynasty. Its grand halls rise up a mountainside one layer upon another. The main stuctures that run from south to north along the central axis are the Hall of Heavenly King, the Grand Hall, Dabei Hall and the Scripture Depositary. The Bell Tower, Gongde Tower, Puzhao Toer and other supplementary buildings are arranged symmetrically on either side of the central axis. Carved on the slender Five-Elders Peak is a huge Chinese character meaning the Buddha. The campus of Xiamen University within the scenic zone is neat and filled with a strong academic air. The Museum of Overseas Chinese has a large number of cultural relics on display to tell the hard struggles of Chinese pioneers in foreign countries.
